Daft things that happen on vigils

2004 Chingle Hall vigil.

I was on a vigil at Chingle Hall . There were about 10 of us and lots of equipment; it took ages for us to get all the equipment in to the great hall as it's called. As we were setting up the equipment I noticed something small and black pass right by my head, I asked if anyone else had seen it but no-one had. We carried on putting the equipment together and again I saw something small and black this time shoot across the far end of the room, yet again no-one seen anything. This kept happening, I kept seeing this small black thing and no-one else did.

After about 10 minutes and 6 or 7 sightings of this small black thing, I was getting a bit P***** off that no-one had seen it. Each time I saw it and asked everyone else about it, they just looked at each other and smiled at me. In the end Mark and Rob came and stood next to me (ready to drag me out screaming and kicking) and gently told me that Chingle Hall was obviously too much for me to handle, as I had only just arrived and I was already seeing things. Just at that point I saw the small black thing again and I was shouting and pointing at where I'd seen it, this time Fiona saw it too, thank god.

We crept out of the great hall, in to the chapel then in to the kitchen, searching every nook and cranny as we went. We finally found our small black friend, it was a tiny little bat, and it was so sweet. Fiona got a tea towel and gently picked the bat up and let it go outside.

Later that night we had a laugh about it and everyone said that they thought I'd lost the plot when I kept saying I'd seen something small and black flying round.

On a vigil, if someone says they have seen something - go and check it out because they just might have seen something.
